Chianti or Montepulciano: Which Should You Choose?
If you are visiting Florence and want to spend a day discovering Tuscan wine country, two names are likely to be high on your list: Chianti and Montepulciano.
Both offer beautiful scenery, historic towns, excellent wineries and some of Tuscany’s most celebrated wines. But they provide quite different experiences — and one important factor to consider before choosing is how much of your day you want to spend travelling.
Chianti: Wine Country on Florence’s Doorstep
One of the biggest advantages of choosing a Chianti wine tour from Florence is its proximity.
The Chianti wine region begins relatively close to Florence, meaning you can leave the city and quickly find yourself surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, cypress-lined roads and small Tuscan villages.
This makes Chianti an excellent choice if you want to maximise your time at wineries and exploring the countryside rather than spending several hours of your day in the car.
Chianti is, of course, famous for Chianti Classico, produced primarily from Sangiovese grapes. Depending on the winery and classification, you may taste everything from fresh and elegant Chianti Classico to more complex Riserva and Gran Selezione wines.
A private Chianti tour can also easily combine winery visits with stops in some of the area’s beautiful towns and villages, including Greve in Chianti, Panzano, Castellina in Chianti and the surrounding countryside.
For first-time visitors to Tuscany, Chianti offers a wonderful introduction to the region: exceptional wine, classic Tuscan landscapes and plenty to experience within an easy day trip from Florence.
Montepulciano: Worth the Journey, but Allow for Travel Time
Montepulciano offers a very different wine experience.
Located in southern Tuscany, Montepulciano is approximately 1.5 hours’ drive from Florence each way, depending on traffic and your starting point. This is an important consideration when planning your day.
A Montepulciano wine tour from Florence therefore involves around three hours of driving over the course of the day. It is certainly achievable as a day trip — and well worth it for visitors particularly interested in the wines and landscape of this part of Tuscany — but you should factor the additional travelling time into your plans.
The signature wine here is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, another Sangiovese-based wine, locally associated with the Prugnolo Gentile name. While both Chianti and Montepulciano have Sangiovese at their heart, differences in terroir, winemaking traditions and regulations give the wines their own distinct character.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is typically known for its structure, elegance and ageing potential, making the area particularly appealing to wine lovers who want to explore another expression of Tuscany’s most important red grape.
The town of Montepulciano itself is also a major part of the experience. Perched high on a hill, its historic centre, Renaissance architecture and sweeping views across the Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana make it a destination in its own right.
So, Which Should You Choose?
If you are staying in Florence and want a relaxed day with less driving and more time for wineries, lunch and exploring the Tuscan countryside, Chianti and San Gimignano is likely to fit your itinerary particularly well.
If Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is specifically on your wine wish list, or you would like to explore southern Tuscany and visit the historic hilltop town of Montepulciano, the longer journey can absolutely be worthwhile. Just remember to allow approximately 1.5 hours each way from Florence.
There isn’t really a wrong choice. It comes down to the kind of day you would like to have.
Choose Chianti if you want: easy access from Florence, classic Tuscan countryside, Chianti Classico and plenty of time to combine wineries with villages and lunch.
Choose Montepulciano if you want: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a beautiful historic hill town, southern Tuscan scenery and don’t mind spending more of the day travelling.
